Heartbeats

Thump, thump, thump.

He catches her eye and she smiles at him.
He waves. She waves back.
Beautiful eyes she thinks. Cute kids he thinks.
They both keep walking.

Thump, thump, thump.

She pours his coffee, he asks her name.
Which pie’s the best? A quick banter.
A slice of cherry.
A bill brought, a tip left.
He thinks about her smile.
She memorizes his eyes.

Thump, thump, thump.

A busy waiting room, two seats left.
Ooops, one seat left. He takes it.
A chat about the weather. Her smile he remembers.
His name is called.
He says nothing as he walks away.

Thump, thump, thump.

It’s raining hard, her car wont start.
She catches his eye and he smiles at her.
Starters dead. Need a lift he says.
Their love story begins.

Thump, thump, thump.
Thump, thump, thump.
Thump, thump, thump.

They never count the heartbeats lost in inaction.

(The average person has roughly 3 billion heartbeats in a lifetime. How many do you have left? Take the chance.)
